Does business marketing hold a high enough place in your list of priorities? Any business owner or corporate executive needs to understand the importance of marketing. Yet, too often this task is pushed to the bottom of the list, especially when economic times are tough.

The reverse is actually true. In an economic downturn, it is vital that a company spend more time and effort on marketing initiatives, not less. It’s all about priorities – what it is it you can do to directly impact the bottom line in a positive manner.

How Most Companies Prioritise

Let’s examine the way that the majority of companies set their priorities.

Of course, the customer comes first, and so they should. Without a customer buying your products or services, there is no need to waste time on marketing – you have no market!

Next in line are tasks and requirements of the staff, whether they be line employees or top executives (although executives usually get pushed up towards the top of the second tier).

This manner of prioritisation is based on who is doing the asking. But is it the most efficient method?

A Different Perspective

Consider the difference if priority was based instead on how a particular initiative contributes to return on investment. In other words, essential tasks would be those that provided the greatest financial reward through increased revenues. This method concentrates on cash flow instead of people flow.

The concept can be related to people. Think of your customers. Certainly they will pay a higher price for those products or services you can provide that give them the greatest value, regardless of their goals.

Employees, too, should focus their efforts where they can do the most to make the company profitable. This is good for them, good for you. It creates job security. 

But how can you put a value on business marketing in order to fit into this priority schedule? The answer is by relying on the tried and true methodology of marketing consultants – analysing sales data, profitability of every offering, depth of the market, position, placement, pricing, and so on.

Of course, business marketing initiatives need to fit in with corporate strategy. It is up to top executives to determine if this is the case with each specific task in the marketing plan. Much of it relies on common sense. Wouldn’t you give higher priority to reaching a larger percentage of your target market than to changing your product’s label colour? Obviously the first task will more directly increase revenue, even though the second one may be a viable proposal.

Neither method of prioritisation is fool-proof. Common sense says that a balanced approach to both profits and people is a wise choice. Business marketing is not an exact science, nor is prioritisation.
Business marketing can be directly linked to a company’s profitability. It is unwise to ignore the financial impact good marketing can make. It is the decision of the owner or chief executives as to what priorities should be placed on any initiatives, or changes to processes, but marketing should never reach the bottom of the list.

 You muted the commercials on the TV last night because you
were fed up with interruption marketing. Ditto if you went through your mail to find most of it is junk. Ditto again, if a stranger phoned you (usually at dinner time) asking you to answer a survey, or give to yet another worthy cause.

Interruption marketing does just that. It interrupts you,
and steals your time.

And it is the darling of mass marketing, which is the child of the mass media, which was born in the 19th century with large circulation newspapers, and thrived in the 20th with radio, TV, and the international media.

Now, it’s overkill. People ignore it (can you remember any of the TV ads you saw last night), or hate it, like that dinnertime phone call.

Before mass marketing, product information was rarely thrust at you. You chose it. You initiated the whole process. It was your idea that you wanted a particular thing. So you’d stroll down the street seeking the store that sold it. Then you’d go into the store to ask a clerk about the quality, price, size, colour, etc. of its assortment of the thing you had in mind. If none suited you, off to another store.

You had control of the whole process. Now, because we’re all becoming immune to interruption marketing, this old-style of marketing is back in favour.

But today it’s called ‘permission marketing’, and you call
all the shots. You permit a firm or individual to provide
you with information about a service or product they offer. And it’s done primarily through the Internet and e-mail.

Why am I telling you all this? Because you’re probably using both types. Your website exemplifies permission marketing, while your cold-canvassing interrupts.

Interestingly, the most favored practice-building techniques of top-earning advisors involve permission marketing. So it behooves you to increase your use of permission marketing, and reduce your use of interruption marketing.

Think about it. People hate interruption marketing, but like permission marketing. Why? Because they’re in control.

Interruption marketing is hit and run. One size fits all.
No distinction between individuals.

In contrast, permission marketing aims at building long-term relationships with individuals. Exactly what you want. But it takes time.

The ideal beginning of a permission-marketing process is for the prospect to phone to say she’s been referred to you, and would like to set up a meeting.

Let’s be honest. This rarely happens.

Next best is you get a referral from a good client. Now, do you phone or write? A letter is less intrusive than a phone call, so write.

A letter is also more impressive than a phone call, and it
tells the prospect much more about you. For example, that
you think she’s worth a lot more than a mere phone call,
that you have a letterhead, a business address, and possibly a degree or designation, or two.

And, as you don’t want your letter to look like a mass
mailing, write, don’t type, her name and address on the
envelope, and stick a real stamp on it.

But don’t pitch product, or your letter’s just another piece of junk mail.

Instead offer something. No, not a trip to Bermuda, but
something ongoing that will help build the recipient’s trust and confidence in you. Your newsletter, for example, thus:
“Your name was given to me by Mr. Paul Piper who felt you’d benefit, as he did, from utilizing my services.

“To introduce you to my areas of expertise I’ve included the current issue of my client newsletter, and will mail more monthly issues before contacting you directly.

“If you would prefer to meet me before that, please call, or write me.”

Just look around and see what people are spending money on. Your mission is to help people solve their problems, so pay attention to products that already sell like hotcakes and find a way to get in on the action.

The second part of the process to generate income with bum marketing is another research project. Yes, doing your diligent research is a key part of bum marketing! Keyword research can be time consuming, but there are many tricks and techniques, systems, and software, indeed, all kinds of tools to help with this. But it’s not rocket science, so you can learn this pretty fast. Use Google to search for keyword popularity, or another search engine that displays search results. When you type in a potential keyword, look to see how many searches have been made on that specific keyword phrase. This gives you a good idea of how relevant, or popular it is, and how many people will be searching with those exact words.

The third step also requires research, believe it or not! To write articles you need to know something about your subject. But you don’t have to be the world’s top authority, so don’t sweat it too much. The main thing about step three in bum marketing, to generate income, is to write fast! Quality is important but quantity is more important. You must crank out tons of articles to generate good income, but the articles don’t have to be masterpieces. There’s a formula, so once you get the hang of it, you’ll find that this part of the process may go even faster than the other parts.
